I should say that these are the people who is living as an example and who shape the world of today. On top of my list is the speech of Steve Jobs in Stanford University 2005.

Quote from the Video:
“Remembering you’re going to die, is the best way I know, to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.” – Steve Jobs

JK Rowling, Harvard 2008

Part 3

Quote from the Video:
“You might never fail on the scale I did. But some failure in life is inevitable. It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all. In which case, you fail by default.” – JK Rowling

Larry Page, University of Michigan, 2009

Quote from the Video:
“I think it is often easier to make progress on mega-ambitious dreams. I know that sounds completely nuts. But, since no one else is crazy enough to do it, you have little competition. There are so few people this crazy that I feel like I know them all by first name. They all travel as if they are pack dogs and stick to each other like glue. The best people want to work the big challenges.” – Larry Page

Bill Gates, Harvard 2007
Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

Part 4

Quote from the Video:
“If you believe that every life has equal value, it’s revolting to learn that some lives are seen as worth saving and others are not. We said to ourselves: “This can’t be true. But if it is true, it deserves to be the priority of our giving.” ” – Bill Gates

Oprah Winfrey, Stanford University 2008

Quote from the Video:
“I consider the world, this Earth, to be like a school. And our life, the classrooms, and sometimes on this planet Earth school, the lessons often come dressed up as detours, or roadblocks, and sometimes, as full blown crises. And the secret I’ve learned to getting ahead, is being open to the lessons – lessons from the grandest universe of all, that is the universe itself.” – Oprah Winfrey

8 Reasons to Go Organic

I was browsing old magazines, and I found this article from Health Care issue dated January to February 2009. It’s all about reasons to go organic and the benefits of eating organically grown foods. My family had chance to eat organically grown foods when we went to Bohol Bee farm, I can say that it was true that organically grown foods taste better. I think this is worth sharing, according to Health Care magazine there are 8 reasons to go organic and these are the following:

1. Organic products are not covered with poisonous chemicals and carcinogenic pesticides. Pesticides in food have been linked to many diseases including cancer, obesity, Alzheimer’s and some birth defects.

2. Organic products contain as much as 50% more vitamins, minerals, enzymes and other micronutrients than conventionally grown foods. According to a 4 year study by the European Union, organic fruits and vegetables contain up tp 40% more antioxidants than their regular grocery counterparts. Organic milk has 60% more antioxidants.

3. Meat that comes from organically raised farm animals are free from antibiotics, growth hormones, anti-parasite drugs and many other medicines. If these chemicals are passed on to people it can contribute cause coronary heart disease, high blood pressure and cancer.

4. Truly organic cosmetics rarely cause allergic reactions or skin infections. The human skin is extremely permeable, and anything you apply is readily absorbed. Have you ever wondered how birth control patches or anti-smoke patches work? That’s how fast chemicals can get into our bodies. Beware of using leave-on cosmetics products like hair dyes, facial creams and make-up that contain toxic and carcinogen chemicals like cocamide-DEA, PEG or the preservative called “parabens”. Chemicals like these are absorbed by the body in small amounts everyday. Long term exposure may cause infertility and cancer.

5. Organic products are safe for pregnant and lactating women. Whatever the mother eats or applies on her body reaches the baby as well. Developing fetuses can get the worst side effects of toxic chemical exposure. Deformities, highly sensitive skin, or allergies can occur in babies exposed to pesticides residues in the womb.

6. Since organic fruits and vegetables are full of juice and flavour, they taste better! In 2001, a study done by a team of researchers from the Washington State Universities concluded that, under judgement by a panel of tasters, organic apples were sweeter. Aside from taste, it has been affirmed that the texture and firmness of the apples were also rated higher than those grown conventionally. These differences have been said to be brought by better soil quality resulting from organic farming techniques.

7. Organic farms support and nurture the balance of the ecosystem. Intensive farming can degrade soil, destroy ecosystems and pollute the air and water. This leads to displacement of birds, insects and wild animals. Conventional agriculture can also seriously damage farm worker’s health because of first-hand exposure to harmful pesticides and fertilizers. These non-organic farmers, mostly in developing countries, have higher risks of cancer, respiratory problems and other major diseases. Unlike their counterparts in developing countries, farmers in developing countries apply toxic agricultural chemicals with minimal or no protection.

8. Organic farms promote soil fertility and protect water resources. Since natural and biodegradable fertilizers are used, no harmful residues are left over. In contrast, excess nitrogen, pesticide residues, and other pollutants often end up in streams, lakes, rivers and groundwater.

What I Did To Pass The Board / Licensure Exam

How to pass the board exam was one of the question I had in mind when I took the board exam for engineers way back 2003. Luckily, I passed the exam on the first take. Have you asked yourself “do I really need to pass the board exam?”  It depends. If you belong to technical courses like engineering, there are some companies which do not require for an applicant to pass the licensure exam although most of the time they would say it is an advantage. For an accounting graduate, you can apply for a job that does not require a CPA license but then your privileges are on hold. For medical and educational courses, license is really a big deal. So you really have to pass the licensure / board exam.

What I did to pass the board / Licensure exam

I attended a review center course.

At school, most of the time our professor would teach us about solving problems based on what the book says, but in the review class you would learn almost every technique to reduce time in solving particular problem. Also, it would give you tips about the trend of questions during the actual exam. There are two ways in choosing the review center. First, I asked my schoolmates ahead of  me who already passed the exam about their preferred review center. Second, I did  research about the existing review centers. Let your fingers do the walking. Choose a review center that is already in the field for so many years because they are most experienced.

I attend refresher course (optional)

On this course, simulations of the actual exam are being done. So I answered  the questions on the best that I could. I focused and took it seriously because I’ll never know if that will appear in the real board exam. I know a friend who did not take the course who actually became number 3 on board exam.

During the review, I don’t  overwork myself. I don’t stay up late at night, it would affect my ability to memorize formulas and terms.

What I did religiously to pass the board exam

Prayers can move mountain. I prayed double time, believing and trusting Him. As the verse in bible says “And all things you ask in prayer, believe and you shall receive.”  Matthew 21:22. I attended  novena to St. Jude Thadeus, it would only consume an hour of a week for nine days.

Before the board exam

I visited the location of the school so that during the exam I won’t be rushing looking for the place. Knowing the place helped me to feel very prepared on that day.

During the Board Exam

I woke up early and I arrived at the place 30 minutes before the exam time. I also wore comfortable clothes or in some case you can wear the prescribed uniform. The exam consumed for about 8 hours, so I bought Gatorade and mammon just to keep my stomach alive and kicking. I did it for 3 consecutive days.

Before I start the test, I prayed that all of the questions listed on the board exam were those I reviewed.

Let me remind to my readers that always follow instructions in answering the test papers. Use your time well and don’t be over confident.

This is how I pass the board exam.

Wash your eyes with no more tears shampoo

My Lola (Grandmother) had red eye, thinking that it was something serious we sent her to the hospital. When the doctor inspected her eye it was found out that there are dust particles along the surface of her eye which caused the redness. The doctor recommended no more tears shampoo to be used to clean/wash lola’s  (Grandmother) eye and it should be done three times a day. This is applicable to all who encounter eye redness due to dust particles. I tried it myself just to make sure it really does not hurt to apply shampoo on the eye and it doesn’t.

Here’s how to do it:

1. Wet your hands and your eye lid

2. Put a drop of no more tears shampoo on your finger tip

3. Then apply it on your eye lid (should be closed)

4. Allow the shampoo to lather

5. Rinse with clean water

6. Do it three times a day

Group Study at Shakeys

Aside from starbucks I considered shakeys as one of the best place to conduct group study.

I and my group mates were able to prove it many times. During our MBA we were required to defend business related case. It was given to us in advance so that we would be able set our own schedule to have meetings with each group member since most of us were working on different industry. We were also tasked to portray role as a presenters, examiners, and evaluators. Presenter role would be the one to present and defend the case. Examiners are the ones who cross examine the courses of action provided by the presenter. Evaluators portray the role as an audience they also serve as mediator between the two. We normally met at Shakeys near our area to conduct group meetings we stay at the restaurant normally for 6 hours from 6pm to 12pm. The ambiance was favorable to students because it was solemn and the feeling was fresh since it has an air conditioning unit. We order bunch of lunch or sometimes super platter plus bottomless lemonade or iced tea. After eating we would occasionally request the waiter to refill our drinks. We had done it several times and it was a good experience. When it comes to cost I think the price of a cup of frapoccino would equal the cost of food that you’re going to order at Shakey’s.

Case Analysis Guidelines – PLM Format

Case Analysis Guidelines – PLM Format

I. Point of View

Any decision maker or person who is in the position to make the final recommendations as mentioned in the case.

II. Time Context

It is the time when the situation is to be analyzed. It can also be the last mentioned date in the case.

III. Statement of the Problem

This defines the perceived problem in the case which becomes the subject of the analysis. It may be presented in declarative or question form.

IV. Statement of the Objectives

These are the goals which the case analysis hopes to achieve. The basically satisfy the test of SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-bound)

IV. Areas of Consideration

State the internal and external environment of the company/firm through SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) Analysis.

VI. Assumptions

Factors which are not clear or not specifically stated in the case but need to be clarified can be stated as assumptions to limit the analysis.

VII. Alternative Courses of Action (ACA)

These are the possible solutions to the problem identified. Each ACA must stand alone and must be able to solve the stated problem and achieve the objectives. Each ACA must be mutually exclusive, I.e., the student must choose an ACA to the exclusion of the others.

Each ACA must be analyzed in the light of the SWOT analysis and assumptions, if there are any. Advantages and disadvantages of each ACA should be clearly stated. If the case contains enough information/data, advantages and disadvantages should be supported quantitatively to minimize bias.

VIII. Conclusion/Recommendation

Based on the analysis of the ACAs, the conclusion, recommendation/decision can be made. There is no need to repeat the analysis done in the ACA section of the analysis.

IX. Plan of Action

The plan of action delineates the series of actions to be undertaken to operationalize the adopted ACA. To ensure that the analysis is done comprehensively, it would be best to program the plan according to the basic functional areas and to present the plan by having column headings for activity, person/unit responsible/ time frame, and budget.

I’m sharing these guidelines for the benefit of those who are taking up their MBA degree.  May this be of help to all of you.
