AutoDesk’s drafting software – AutoCAD is the most widely used computer-aided design (CAD) drawing software around the world. It is utilized by Architects, Interior Designers, Engineers, draftsmen, Project managers, graphic designers, and professionals from different industries.
AutoCAD has so many advantages (that outweigh disadvantages) compared to manual drafting. It helps its user create 2D and 3D drawings efficiently and accurately. With the use of CAD, new drawings and layouts can be made at shorter lead time thus reducing the manufacturing cost. AutoCAD’s capability of creating three dimensional drawings helps detect costly mistakes in terms of design and dimensions by comparing the drawing against the actual. Designers / draftsmen can immediately rectify the mistake on the design without much trouble like redoing the whole drawing.
Disadvantages though very few, cannot be disregarded. To use AutoCAD, designers / draftsmen need to undergo training which is costly because it would take days to be familiar with the software and at least three months to master it. The software is also expensive. To purchase a license, companies need to pay thousands of dollars.
Students and Educators however, can download free AutoCAD software at AutoDesk website plus free 3-year license, in case they want to learn drafting on their own. They just have to search for step by step tutorials online (like in youtube) to be familiar with the software.
For aspiring AutoCAD designers in the Philippines who want to learn the software in a classroom environment, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) has accredited schools that offer AutoCAD trainings.
